To roll back to Windows Phone 8.1, you will need a computer, Phone, a USB and the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. You can go through these below mentioned steps that you have to perform to go back to the earlier Windows operating system:

Step-1: Download and install Windows Phone Recovery Tool on your PC

Step-2: Now, you have to open Windows Phone Recovery tool. And connect your Windows Phone to the PC through USB cable. In case if your phone is not automatically detected, you can disconnect it from the computer and press My phone was not detected at the bottom and follow the on-screen instructions.

Step-3: Now, you can tap on Phone's model on the screen to proceed further once the phone is detected successfully.

Step-4: On the next screen, you should see the software versions, so tap the reinstall button at the bottom.

Step-5: A disclaimer's note will now appear suggesting to create a backup of your Windows Phone. So, tap to continue at the bottom.

Step-6: The recovery tool downloads and installs the firmware. However, this step can take some time mainly depending on the speed of the network connection. The installation file weights in around 1.7GB.

Step-7: You will get a message saying, “Operation successfully completed” upon the completion of the process.

Finally, your Windows Phone device must be on Windows Phone 8.1.
